INSPIRATION INTERVIEW STYLE

Interview with British Couture Designer Raishma

It is always a delight coming across talented people, who have worked hard, & made their vision a reality. Recently I had the pleasure of collaborating & doing an interview with Raishma, a talented British Asian Couture Designer. She is an excellent role model, both as a designer, & entrepreneur.

Self motivation and self belief are the key to your success.

~Raishma

Raishma drew her fashion inspiration from her mother, as a child. She went on to study fashion at the De Montfort University, and trained with designers Bella Freud and Bruce Oldfield. From thereon, she learnt the art of bridal corsetry, & worked with Elizabeth Emmanuel – Princess Diana’s wedding dress designer. This led to the launch of a her own bridal boutique in 1998, with the Asian bride in mind. She went on to open an online store in 2014, following popularity of her prêt collection. More recently, Raishma opened up her new London store. Her designs are bespoke, elegant, & classic; there are also creations that display an elegant harmony of eastern heritage with western tradition.

Raishma shares with us more about her inspiration & vision in a short interview below:

1. What inspired you to become a fashion designer?

I was mainly interested in Bollywood films like Pakeezah, and I loved the silks and embroideries on my mother’s Indian clothes. But I always loved mainstream red carpet glamour, in terms of the cut and drape, which was missing in traditional Asian clothes. I started sewing at age 10.

2. Tell us more about the design process. How do you see the brand evolving?

The design process starts with an idea/colour/theme or just an embroidery. Trends in the mainstream and in India have an influence on the collection as well, but my looks are classic, and don’t date season to season. The brand will become an international mainstream brand in the longer term.

3. Could you share a style tip with the readers?
Less is more!! Asian styling tends to be more is more! Be understated and elegant.
4. What single piece of advice would you give to other women aspiring to do business?
Be focused and determined and appreciate that it will be hard. Self motivation and self belief are the key to your success.
5. Who is your role model?
The founder of Net a Porter, Natalie Massenet; she is inspirational and single handed changed the online retail landscape.
6. What is your motto in life?
Be true to yourself and have faith.
7. Your favourite book? And what do you like about it?
Any light hearted rom com that lets my mind switch off for a while!
Thank you for your time Raishma!

Here I am wearing a beautiful hand-embroidered tunic, gifted by Raishma. It is in the hue of midnight blue, with eye-catching gem & bead-work. This is a classic heritage piece, and could be worn to a family get-together, dining out, or party. With the right amount of creativity, it can be jazzed up, or down. I love the easy simplicity of it.

  • This interview is a fantastic read. Raishma is a truly inspiring lady.

I remember that there was a time when I started learning Bulgarian traditional embroidery and wanted to bring it to modern fashion, but not having such background and education, it remained in my dreams.

It was a real pleasure to read how she has implemented her passion and transformed the Indian embroidery into a Less-is-more modern glam garments!
