A fashion inspired afternoon tea at The Berkeley should be on every fashionista’s list of things to do in London. Prepare to be wowed!

Pop on your Jimmy Choo’s & head to Knightsbridge with some girl friends. This is a stylish afternoon tea with a fun & sassy twist. Going to go back with my mother!

Prêt-à-Portea takes inspiration from the latest finest designer trends, the collection changes with the seasons every 6 months. Take a journey through the hottest catwalk trends from Gucci, Mulberry, Balenciaga & others. All reimagined as culinary eye-catching masterpieces, they are a delight to try.

It is the original fashionista tea, designed by the talented Head Pastry Chef Mourad Khiat. Last year was the tenth year anniversary of Prêt-à-Portea. A recipe book was launched to celebrate, more on that below.

The current Summer Spring 17 collection of cakes and biscuits are playful and colourful. You will see a spectacular display of bold colours, ruffles, & graphic lines.

Recreated are designer pieces from Gucci, Ralph & Russo, Charlotte Olympia, Stella McCartney, Miu Miu,Dolce & Gabbana, & Balenciaga.

Charlotte Olympia’s high-kicking ‘Chiquita’ banana pump biscuits were my favourite. So playful and fun!  We learnt to make them & the rest of the collection in a Prêt-à-Portea masterclass with Mourad Khiat.

Prêt-à-Portea Masterclass with Head Pastry Chef Mourad Khiat

For the masterclass we went behind the scenes to the Berkeley kitchens below. This is where all the magic happens, the kitchens are buzzing with activity. Wifts of colour, rows of freshly baked bread, pastries and cakes.

We were lucky to meet with the talented master himself, Mourad Khiat. It’s lovely to see the people, stories & inspiration behind the creations. They are so dedicated to their art. For it is art, is it not?

I won’t make a legendary pastry chef just yet, but this masterclass was incredibly fun and special. Seeing a master at work & learning his techniques was humbling and enlightening. Inspiring in short.

Mourad showed us step by step his secrets for creating delicate Prêt-à-Portea masterpiece creations. He is a great teacher,& an absolute delight to work with.

I’ll say that it’s not easy to make these cakes and biscuits, so kudos to him for such inspiring work.

We took home our creations, & a cute gift of a ‘Shoe’ Chef Apron and the book ‘Prêt-à-Portea, High-Fashion Bakes & Biscuits’. Adore!

This recipe book was launched to celebrate the 10-year anniversary for Prêt-à-Portea. It has Prêt-à-Portea’s secret recipes and baking techniques that Mourad has used over the past 10 years.

If you fancy trying the masterclass out, bookings of 1-6 are available per session.

Prêt-à-Portea Designer Afternoon Tea

After a fun couple of hours doing the masterclass we were ready for some fashionable afternoon tea.

The fashion tea is served in the stylish Collin’s Room, an elegant & light-filled space, that has a contemporary feel. A beautiful setting to make some wonderful memories.

The staff are wonderful, & gave us some background information on the catwalk inspiration behind the fancy designs. There are many fragrant teas and infusions to choose from on the menu. I loved the Jasmine, honey orchid, & peony tea. Also recommend the hot chocolate, so delicious.

We had a selection of exquisitely presented miniature savoury skewers, taster spoons, elegant canapés, & sandwiches with delicious fillings. Everything was yum!

Vegan, fish, & halal savoury options available.

Stealing the show were the tiers of beautiful cakes and biscuits. A spectacular display of fashion & artistic talent, & a sweet tooth delight. Cakes & biscuits inspired by the latest iconic pieces by Gucci, Ralph & Russo, Charlotte Olympia, Stella McCartney, Miu Miu,Dolce & Gabbana, & Balenciaga.

Ralph & Russo makes an appearance as a pain de Gênes dress cake with velvet lavender cremeux and beriolette jelly, with a sugar frill. Balenciaga’s street style look is reimagined as a raspberry bavarois and blueberry compote, topped with a stiletto biscuit.

Mulberry’s ‘it’ Pembroke bag in a Valrhona ivoire chocolate-glazed cake, is inspired by British collegiate stripes.

Final thoughts

Prêt-à-Portea and masterclass at The Berkeley were amazing experiences. Wonderful staff, brilliant service, delicious food, inspirational & fun activities, and gorgeous surroundings.

This is perfect for a girly afternoon out, or a fun activity to do with one’s mother or a loved one.

Highly recommended as one of the best afternoon tea experiences in London! This Autumn a new collection will be released, I can’t wait to see the new creative designs.

Thanks to the Berkeley for their warm hospitality, all opinions my own.

I am a huge fan of afternoon tea and to do it in London where it all began AND to have it be about fashion is just too much! I would love to do this and how fun it would be. I also have a love of baking and making these amazing little treats would be an experience of a lifetime. What a fun and whimsical tea party! The little touches from the edible flowers, to the cookies shaped like high heels and the upside down dress with a leg up are just too endearing! I could only imagine how cute everything was and how many photos you took! What a fabulous experience and I will look into this if I am ever in London! xoxo, Christine
